Malaysia

Even though we had spent a few days in Malaysia once, way back when, it took place strictly on the island of Penang so, somehow, despite our many trips to Southeast Asia, we had still never made it to the famous Kuala Lumpur. As luck would have it, the best (i.e. cheapest) flight from Nepal to Sri Lanka was on Malindo Air and routed through “KL”, as the cool kids call it, so we extended our layover to a few nights in order to check it out and enjoy some big city life with a couple days in Kuala Lumpur after our slightly more primitive time in Nepal (trust me, Kathmandu doesn’t count). We got in quite late, although the benefit of that was next to no traffic on the fast, modern Malaysian freeways. We were giddy with delight when it took us just over half an hour to travel…

Sorry for the delay, folks, I know you’re all just dying for some closure to this whole sordid affair. Now that we’ve been back for nearly a week I think it’s probably well past time we finished up. Things have been a tad hectic since our return but the trip back itself was rather uninteresting, which is pretty much exactly what I look for in a plane ride, even a 20 hour one (actually three different ones). Our last day in Bangkok involved a whole lot of souvenir / gift / “impulse purchases that will never be used at home” -shopping. That, combined with temperatures upwards of 40C, train fatigue, and Bangkok’s ever-present innate charm, made us actually anxious to get on the plane (or at least into the air-conditioning). Upon finding ourselves with some time to kill several thousand feet above the Pacific we started to compile some notes…

First things first, I’ll acknowledge the humbling defeat the Giants suffered yesterday. Good game, but pretty disappointing. If Armstead’s interception return for a TD isn’t called back, or Lewis doesn’t break that kick return for a TD right after Dixon scored for the Giants, it could have been a different outcome. Even though the Ravens’ fourth quarter touchdowns came after everyone had already packed it in, they definitely deserved it. That defense is incredible. So, as you may have figured out by now, I managed to find a place that was showing the Super Bowl here. More on that story later. Thailand, at last. Our original destination, the one that put all our plans in motion, and it took us nearly four months to get here. I guess Indonesia really grows on you, kind of like some nasty virus, or heroin. It’s only been a few days but already we’ve…
